William T. Sherman was in the middle of his campaign when he decides to leave war lines and start marching south to Atlanta with 60000 union soldiers. He destroyed anything that was in his way and made sure to destroy anything that the south could use at their advantage. They marched destroying telegraphs, factories, gun ammunition, and especially railroad tracks. As Sherman marched more and more, many more confederate troops gave in to Sherman and his army. Sherman finally got to Atlanta on November 16 and destroyed the city completely burning it to the ground. His army rested there for a while but after that they led back to the march. Time passed and troops weren’t sure where they were going but because Sherman was leading they were positive he would lead them to victory. Sherman was finally able to reach his goal by the second week of December. Sherman had reached Savannah and planned to attack but before they could the confederate soldiers had already fled. Savannah was now Sherman’s which made this a union victory. After that on December 24, 1864 Sherman presented savannah as a Christmas present to Lincoln whom kindly did not accept it. During this march 650 confederate men were killed and there were 62 casualties on the union side.
