On September 17, 1862 the bloodiest battle of the Civil war was taken in place, The Battle of Antietam.The two main generals in this battle were Gen. George B. McClellan and Gen. Robert E. Lee. This battle was a single day battle and a Union victory. The battle of antietam was the worst battle of all with a number of over 25000 casualties. In this battle Gen. Robert E. Lee was trying to ambush the union capital, Washington D.C. Gen. George B. McClellan and his army came face to face with E. Lee and his troops at Sharpsburg, Maryland. McClellan then tried to send E. Lee and his army back to Northern Virginia from which where they had come. E. Lee's army was outnumbered 2 to 1 but that did not stop him from fighting against the Union. meanwhile McClellan was not sending his whole army still letting E. Lee put up a fight.
Importance
This battle is to be remembered not just because it was the bloodiest single day in all of war history but because it had also bought hope. After this war Lincoln found a spark of hope which led him to sign the emancipation proclamation. This was also a much needed union victory after the battle of Bull Run had taken place.

- Two soldiers from the union had found E. Lee’s plan so his plan had been known in advance.
- After the war Lincoln had brought McClellan’s military career to an end because of McClellan’s poor leadership skills during the war,
- Part of the reason that E. Lee planned on going to the North was to alight the confederate army by trying to win a battle on Northern soil.
